Braglands Barn Garden

December

December is, for us, the lowest point in the gardening year.  Even the longest flowering of the late summer perennials have finished, any tender plants have perished, almost all the autumn colour has gone and there is, as yet, no sign of the snowdrops and the promise of Spring.  Nevertheless, there are still excellent plants to enjoy and many evergreens, easily overlooked at other times, come into their own.

A young Liquidambar styraciflua still holding its leaves just before Christmas despite the sharp November frosts

Beautiful colour and marking on the bark and buds of Acer grosseri var hersii.

Weak winter sun on a selection of evergreens outside the front window

A wider view.  The West Somerset railway runs through the trees on the far side of the valley and it would have been nice if a steam train had been going past at the time.

A beautiful Leucothe growing near the front gate.  Sadly a very slow grower.
